Department of Geology

The Department of Geology, Federal University Lokoja was established in 2012 and opened to academic activities in the 2012/2013 academic session on the Adankolo Campus. The Bachelor of Science Honours (B. Sc. Hons) degree in Geology offered by the Department is presently a 4-year degree programme open to secondary school graduates with a sound background in the science subjects. At inception, the student enrolment was 13, and the number of pioneer staff was 11 comprising seven academic staff, three technical staff and one administrative staff. The pioneer Head of Department was Professor Abdullahi Emmanuel Bala.

By the 2013/2014 academic session, the student enrolment rose to 37 and the number of staff, 20. The student enrolment became 75 in the 2014/2015 academic session. The Department shares one administrative block, separated by two classrooms, with the Department of Chemistry while one laboratory is shared with the Department of Geography. Mission Statement

To train students to become broad based geologists through course work, field work, students’ industrial works experience scheme (SIWES) for the energy and minerals industries, environmental and engineering firms, government planning, regulatory and research agencies, and non-governmental organizations, and for self - employment.

To be the best Department of Geology among the nine universities established in 2011 and one of the top ranking Departments of Geology in Africa and in the whole world.

Our philosophy is to provide both theoretical and practical training to enable the graduates to apply the acquired knowledge and skills to advance sustainable development and the frontiers of geological knowledge.
