The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi has received the report of a 7-member committee constituted to set up the University Senior Staff Club that would provide social services and functions as well as create avenue for recreation and relaxation in order to enhance the work life of both staff and non-staff members of the University Community.

While presenting the report on Thursday, June 16, 2022, the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Dr Jeremiah Ayok, justified the purpose for establishing the Senior Staff Club. He stated that the “FULokoja Staff Club” would be “a group dedicated to serving the University Community, working with the Administration to recognize staff, provide avenue for recreation and relaxation purposes, provide scholarships to graduate students, and put together social functions to enhance work life.”

Furthermore, Dr. Ayok reiterated that the Senior Staff Club would enhance the staff support functions and contribute to the University’s roles of teaching, learning, discovery and cultural enrichment, while promoting closer ties among Staff Club members through social activities, engagements and networking. “The Staff Club has a proud tradition – could found the annual Staff Recognition Luncheon – and a bright future for members,” he added. The Chairman thanked the Vice-Chancellor and his Management Team for the confidence reposed in him and other members of the Committee.

Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, who was dilighted and impressed with the report, equally thanked the Committee for a job well done, in spite of the short period given to them to carry out the task. He charged the Steering Committee (which will now serve as the Caretaker Committee that will run the affairs of the club before electing its executive members) to immediately implement the recommendations and ensure that the Senior Staff Club takes-off in earnest, while pledging Management’s support and commitment to its actualisation.

It would be recalled that the Vice-Chancellor had on May 27, 2022 constituted the 7-member steering Committee to immediately set up the University Senior Staff Club; come up with a workable document for the effective running of the club, identify suitable locations at both Campuses and sources of revenue for its commencement, recruit members, amongst other terms of reference.

Other members of the pro tem Committee include: Dr Tosin Olagunju (Secretary), Dr Senator Okosun, Mr Isah Okino, Mrs Winnie Daniel Olaniru, Mr Abdulazeez Jatto, and Mr Benjamin Atabo.

According to the Committee, the Senior Staff Club membership would be open to all Senior Academic and Non-academic Staff of the University, while outsiders with reputable character would also be considered.

Undoubtedly, this avant-garde idea which was initiated and being implemented by the Professor Akinwumi-led Administration is expected to enhance the social and work life of both staff and non-staff members of the University, thus alluding to the popular maxim: “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
