On this historic day 12 years ago (October 17, 2012), the Senate of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) was constituted!

The University Senate, which is the highest academic body in the university and comprised of all Professors, Deans and Directors, and Heads of Academic Departments, organizes and controls teachings as well as promotes research. It sees to the disciplining of students; awards degrees, diplomas, and certificates; recommends to Council persons found worthy of the award of honorary degrees, and grants fellowships and prizes.

The FUL Senate, under the Chairmanship of the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi, had only 14 members and five (5) professors as of October 2012. Remarkably, the Senate membership has grown to 127 members (with 68 professors) and an additional 15 attendees.

Under the visionary leadership of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, the third Vice-Chancellor, the thirteen-year-old Institution has witnessed remarkable development and transformation in all facets. It now has two (2) campuses and study centers outside Lokoja and Kogi State.

Within the last three years, the number of faculties has increased from 4 to 10 with a College of Health Sciences, academic programmes from 32 to 58, students population growth from about 6000 to 17,000 and counting, number of professors from 24 (21 male and 3 female) to 68 (59 male and 9 female), and the inaugural lectures held so far grew from 2 to 20 with 10 public lectures organized between 2021 and 2024.

Also, the administration established about 20 Centers, Institutes, Directorates, and other offices/divisions to reposition the University for excellence and global competitiveness and opened several business avenues to boost the fast-growing university's Internally Generated Revenue, among other landmark achievements.

This date was therefore adopted as the University's Founders' Day and Convocation Week in 2023 by the administration of Professor Akinwumi to commemorate the 6th and 7th combined Convocation Ceremony that was held last year.

This year's Founders' Day would have been marked today October 17, 2024, as part of activities outlined for the 8th Convocation Ceremony, but due to the scheduled Kogi State Local Government Elections, the Founders' Day and other Convocation programmes were rescheduled to next week between Monday, October 21 and Sunday, October 27, 2024.

It is on this note, therefore, that we celebrate FUL Founding Fathers and the profound growth our University has witnessed since it was established on the 16th of February 2011. No doubt, Federal University Lokoja has come of age!

We equally use this auspicious occasion to appreciate everyone, including past and present members of the University Management/Principal Officers, staff, students, other members of the University community, and stakeholders, for your sacrifices, support, and modest contributions to the growth of our great citadel of learning - Federal University Lokoja. Together, we will make FUL greater! See more images here
