2026 World Health Day: Together For Health, Stand With Science

Today, 7th April 2026, marks World Health Day, an annual global observance that celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948.

The global theme for this year, "Together for Health. Stand with Science," strongly emphasizes the critical role of scientific knowledge, research, innovation, and international collaboration in safeguarding the health of people, animals, and the environment. It calls on institutions and individuals everywhere to embrace evidence-based decisions, reject misinformation, and support health systems that are responsive, inclusive, and sustainable.

For us in the Directorate of University Health Services (UHS) of this great institution, this theme deeply aligns with the welfare-driven vision and people-centred policies of the University Management under the leadership of Prof. Gbenga Ibileye. It reflects our continuous commitment to ensuring that members of the University community have access to reliable, professional, and scientifically guided healthcare services.

In line with this year’s global message, the University Health Services wishes to reassure all staff, students, and members of the University community of our sustained preparedness to deliver enhanced, accessible, and evidence-based healthcare services that promote both physical and mental well-being. Over the years, the University Health Services has evolved significantly—from a modest outpatient facility into a fully functional secondary healthcare provider equipped to meet diverse health needs within the institution.

Today, the Directorate provides a wide range of essential health services, including:

  1. A broad range of surgical interventions supported by a fully equipped operating theatre;
  2. Comprehensive dental care services for preventive and curative oral health needs;
  3. Maternal, neonatal, and infant healthcare services, including antenatal care, safe deliveries, and newborn care;
  4. Eye care services, including vision assessment and treatment support;
  5. Mental health services delivered by medical consultants and other qualified and experienced professionals;
  6. Improved laboratory and diagnostic capabilities for timely and accurate medical evaluation;
  7. Immunisation services and community health practices aimed at disease prevention; and
  8. Health promotion programmes for the University community, including reproductive health services for students, cancer screening for male and female staff, and preventive health education.

This day also gives us another opportunity to remind the members of the University community to prioritise their health, avoid harmful traditional and cultural practises, say NO to quacks and roadside medicine, and to make use of available staff health welfare packages.

On behalf of all of us at the Directorate of University Health Services, HAPPY WORLD HEALTH DAY!!!

Dr. Mrs. Chinenye Oche Otorkpa (FWACP, FMCFM)
