The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, has assured persons with disabilities, PWDs, of the institution’s commitment to inclusive policies, accessibility and equal opportunities, declaring that supporting them is not an act of charity but a responsibility the university owes them.

Professor Ibileye gave the assurance when members of the National Association of Applicants with Disabilities paid him a courtesy visit at the university.

Speaking during the visit, the Vice Chancellor described the courage and determination of persons living with disabilities as qualities worthy of admiration, stressing that the university would continue to create opportunities for them within the limits of available approvals and regulations.

“We are not doing you a favour, it is a duty that we owe you. We will do this and many more,” the Vice Chancellor stated.

He noted that Federal University Lokoja has maintained a culture of inclusiveness right from the era of the pioneer administration, adding that the institution remains committed to accommodating persons with disabilities in employment, education and physical development planning.

Professor Ibileye also highlighted the rapid growth of the university, revealing that the institution has expanded from about 235 students in 2012 to over 30,000 students presently, while staff strength has increased from about 20 to more than 1,600.

He described the university as a liberal corporate institution that appreciates resilience and determination. “I see people who are determined to confront their disabilities. That is the hallmark of courage and that is what it takes to excel in society,” he said.

Earlier, the State Coordinator of the association, Comrade Samuel Mark, congratulated Professor Ibileye on his emergence as Vice Chancellor and commended his swift approval of their request for an audience.

He said members of the association were encouraged by the positive developments and growing reputation of the university under the Vice Chancellor’s leadership.

According to him, many persons with disabilities possess valuable skills and academic qualifications but have continued to face difficulties in securing employment opportunities over the years. “We believe in ability. In our own special way, God has given us abilities,” he said.

The association appealed to the university management to consider persons with disabilities in its physical planning projects and also requested the introduction of Special Education programmes to make learning more accessible to people within the region.

The delegation also offered prayers for the Vice Chancellor and the continued progress of the university. See more pictures here
