The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, has pledged closer collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to strengthen safety and security across both campuses.
During the visit to the Kogi State Command Headquarters, Phase II, Lokoja, Prof. Ibileye said student welfare and a secure learning environment remain top priorities for his administration. He noted that effective town-gown relations with security agencies are critical to preventing threats and ensuring swift response when incidents occur.
“Our university is prone to security threats, especially as it shares boundaries with neighboring Niger State, and therefore requires serious security surveillance,” Ibileye said.
He commended the NSCDC for its prompt response to calls from FUL. “The records show a smooth synergy between this agency and past administrations of FUL, and I intend to maintain that record. I urge the Corps not to relent whenever we call,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor outlined specific areas for partnership, including joint patrols around campus perimeters, intelligence sharing, and training for university security personnel. He stressed that a safe campus directly supports the university’s goals for hybrid learning, research, and community engagement.
To institutionalize the partnership, Ibileye announced that a Committee on Joint Community and Security of Life and Property would be inaugurated, and requested the NSCDC to nominate a representative.
Receiving the delegation, the Kogi State Commandant of the NSCDC, Olumide Ebenezer Aletan, commended the proactive engagement and assured the university of the Corps’ readiness to deepen cooperation.
He highlighted other strategic areas of collaboration, including the Corps’ Safe School Programme, VIP protection, and training of officers in covert and overt intelligence gathering. Aletan appreciated the VC’s visit and wished him a safe return.
The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. S.D. Musa; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Jacqueline Badaki; University Bursar, Mr. John Shilo; Chief Security Officer, Rrt. Lt. Col. Babafemi Sunday Mepaiyeda; SSA to the VC, Alhassan Sheikh Ibrahim; members of the Directorate of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation, amongst others.
The visit forms part of Prof. Ibileye’s early engagements with key stakeholders in his first 100 days, aimed at positioning FUL as a regional leader in applied education and student welfare. See more pictures here
