The atmosphere at the Felele Campus of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) carried a renewed sense of purpose earlier today, March 4, 2026, as hundreds of 300-level students filed into the hall for what turned out to be more than a routine academic exercise.

It was the 10th Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Orientation Programme, a yearly event that marks the formal launch of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme for eligible students.

But this year, officials made it clear they wanted students to leave with something deeper than a timetable and a placement letter. They wanted them to leave with a conviction.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, charged the students to take their SIWES seriously, noting that it will give them hands-on practical experience for life.

The Vice Chancellor, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Jacqueline Badaki, also encouraged the students to remain good ambassadors of the institution in their places of attachment. "We look forward to hearing success stories from all of you as you soar in your respective endeavours," she added.

Meanwhile, in his welcome address, the Director of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme at Federal University Lokoja, Professor Fabian Apeh Akpah, noted that the training was unique on two counts: it was the first SIWES orientation since Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye assumed office as Vice Chancellor, and it was also the first since he himself was appointed Director of SIWES.

Professor Akpah painted a picture of a directorate that does far more than issue letters of placement. The SIWES Directorate at FUL, he explained, serves as a vital link between the university, the ITF, the NUC, and the industries that receive students for training.

Also, the representative of the ITF Area Manager, Mr. Napoleon Abba, described SIWES as a yearly routine that is absolutely essential to the growth and learning of every student and urged those in the hall to treat it with the seriousness it deserves.

His message was simple: the students seated before him were not attending an optional workshop. They were preparing for a rite of passage that every graduate in their field must cross.

"The importance of SIWES cannot be overemphasized because, as a student, you must pass through it. The industrial practicability is showcased to you through this programme," he told the students.

A major highlight of the event was a hands-on training session for students on the documentation process and their expectations by the staff of ITF.

Also present were the Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Rebecca A. Okojie, represented by Deputy Registrar, Dr Roseline Toluhi, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Isa Yunusa, and other senior officers of the university, including Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments. Also in attendance were the ITF SIWES Accountant, the ITF SIWES Officer, Mall. Seriki Abdulhafis, Departmental SIWES Coordinators, and all staff of the SIWES Directorate. See more pictures here
