The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Kogi State, has commended the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Gbenga Ibileye, and the entire university management for creating a conducive and supportive environment that enables corps members to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the institution.

The commendation came during the Giving Back Threefold Outreach, organised by a corps member, Bankole Elizabeth Oluwatosin, held on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the Multipurpose Hall, Felele Campus of the university.

Representing the State Coordinator, Mr. Femi Osungbohun, the Assistant Director, Corp Inspection and Monitoring, Mr. Eko Emmanuel, expressed appreciation to the university leadership for prioritising the welfare of corps members. He noted that such an enabling atmosphere has continued to inspire impactful initiatives among serving members.

“It is my honour and privilege to stand here with every sense of responsibility,” he said. “We must first commend the Vice-Chancellor and the management of Federal University Lokoja for providing a level playing ground and ensuring the welfare of corps members posted to this institution. This has made it possible for them to contribute meaningfully.”

He further emphasised that the Community Development Service remains one of the cardinal objectives of the NYSC scheme, describing it as a vital platform through which corps members promote unity and sustainable development within their host communities.

“We are gathered here to honour one of the cardinal pillars of the NYSC programme, which is the CDS. It is a secondary assignment designed to foster community development and national integration, and this initiative we are witnessing today is highly commendable,” he added.

In his remarks, the Head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Dr. Peter Okpeh, praised the donor for her dedication and lasting impact on the department. He described her service as exemplary and deeply appreciated.

“She has been with us for close to a year and has shown commitment and selfless service. This impact is indelible, and the department will continue to remember her for a long time,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the donor, Corps Member Bankole Elizabeth Oluwatosin, who served in the Department of English and Literary Studies with state code KG/25A/1357, expressed gratitude to the university community and all supporters who made the outreach possible.

“We are here as part of our Giving Back Threefold Outreach, aimed at impacting the community in three meaningful ways. For Federal University Lokoja, we are donating books to support the academic growth of students,” she said.

She encouraged students to remain focused and make effective use of the resources provided, stressing that knowledge remains a powerful tool for success.

“Stay focused, stay driven, and remember that knowledge is power. Let these books fuel your academic journey and inspire you to achieve your dreams,” she added.

She also appreciated the NYSC for the opportunity to serve, noting that while posting corps members to places of primary assignment is important, performance and impact remain the true measure of service.

A major highlight of the event was the formal presentation of literature textbooks to the Department of English and Literary Studies, a gesture widely applauded by staff and students alike.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Ibileye, who was represented by the Director, Directorate of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation, Dr. Tosin Olagunju, commended the corps member for her thoughtfulness and commitment to academic development.

He noted that the donation aligns with the university’s vision of fostering excellence in teaching, learning and community engagement.

The VC further charged students to utilise the donated materials effectively, stressing that such opportunities must translate into improved academic performance and intellectual growth.

He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote learning and collaboration between the university and national service participants.

The NYSC Kogi delegation also had in attendance Assistant Director, Corps Discipline and Reward, Mr. Njoku Ugochukwu Nnamdi, Assistant Director and Head of CDS, Mrs. Akika Alice, amongst others. See more pictures here
