The Centre for Safety Management, Federal University Lokoja, in collaboration with Safety Analytics Limited, successfully organised a three-day Executive Training Programme on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) from 4th to 6th May, 2026 held at the Multipurpose Hall, Felele, for Principal Officers, Provosts, Deans, Directors, and other senior management staff of the University.

The training programme was organised as part of the University’s strategic commitment to strengthening institutional safety, promoting occupational health compliance, enhancing leadership-driven safety culture, and advancing global best practices in workplace risk management.

Declaring the programme open on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Ibileye Solomon, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. S. D. Musa, commended the Centre for Safety Management and Safety Analytics Limited for organising a timely and impactful programme aimed at deepening safety consciousness within the University system. He emphasised that safety remains a shared responsibility and a vital component of institutional excellence, particularly within a rapidly expanding academic environment.

In his welcome remarks, the Director of the Centre, Engr. Dr. Monday Abutu Idakwo, stated that the initiative reflects the University’s determination to institutionalise a proactive and sustainable safety culture across all academic, administrative, and technical units. He further highlighted the strategic partnership between Federal University Lokoja and Safety Analytics Limited, which led to the establishment of the Centre for Safety Management and currently supports the administration of the Postgraduate Diploma and Professional Master’s programmes in Safety Management.

The programme featured intensive theoretical and practical sessions facilitated by experienced safety professionals and certified HSE experts who are members of Safety Analytics Limited, drawn from academia and relevant emergency and safety service organisations.

Delivering the opening technical session, the Director of Safety Analytics Limited, Mr. Fasusi Yinka, presented lectures on Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Compliance. His presentations exposed participants to modern safety principles, legal and regulatory frameworks, workplace compliance requirements, and institutional safety responsibilities.

Another resource person, Professor Akaninyene Ekong, facilitated sessions on Occupational Safety and Workplace Safety, with emphasis on hazard prevention, workplace risk mitigation, safety leadership, and the integration of safety into organisational culture and operational processes.

A major highlight of the programme was the practical emergency response training conducted by Abubakar Abdullahi, a member of Safety Analytics Limited from the Nigerian Red Cross Society. The First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) session featured hands-on demonstrations of emergency response procedures, including basic life support techniques and accident response protocols. Participants actively engaged in the practical exercises, gaining valuable experience in emergency preparedness and incident response management.

The fire safety practical session was facilitated by Isah Abdulrahman Adinoyi, also a member of Safety Analytics Limited from the Federal Fire Service. The session provided participants with practical training on fire prevention, fire risk control, and emergency fire response procedures. Participants were trained on the correct use of fire extinguishers and actively participated in live fire suppression demonstrations, equipping them with practical skills required to respond effectively during fire emergencies.

Participants were drawn from strategic operational and administrative units of the University, including the Directorate of Works and Services, Directorate of Physical Planning and Development, Faculty of Engineering, College of Postgraduate Studies, and the Centre for Safety Management. Their participation reflects the University’s deliberate effort to mainstream safety consciousness across all sectors of its operations.

In their assessment, the participants described the training as highly informative, practical, engaging, and impactful, noting that the knowledge and practical skills acquired would significantly improve workplace safety practices, institutional compliance, and operational resilience within the University community.

The Executive HSE Training Programme further reinforces Federal University Lokoja’s growing reputation as a leading institution in professional safety education, institutional risk management, and sustainable workplace practices. The successful hosting of the programme also positions the University for future professional engagements, including the potential hosting of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) Annual Induction in Kogi State.

At the conclusion of the programme, participants were encouraged to sustain the momentum by applying the knowledge and practical skills acquired towards building a safer, smarter, and more resilient University environment.
