The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, has paid a courtesy visit to the 12 Brigade Command Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Lokoja, to strengthen collaboration between the university and the military.
The visit, which took place at the Brigade Headquarters on 19 May 2026, focused on fostering civil-military relations and exploring areas of partnership in security, research, and community development.
Speaking during the engagement, Prof. Ibileye said the university recognizes the critical role of the Nigerian Army in maintaining peace and stability, which are essential for academic activities to thrive. He noted that a strong partnership between the university and the military would enhance the safety of staff and students and create opportunities for joint training and knowledge exchange.
“The Federal University Lokoja values its relationship with the 12 Brigade Command. We are here to seek your support and partnership as we work to provide a secure environment for learning and to contribute to national development through research and community service,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
Prof. Ibileye briefed the Brigade Commander on ongoing developments at FUL, including academic expansion, infrastructure projects, and student welfare initiatives. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to address challenges affecting the university community.
He also highlighted the dangers of insecurity to FUL, given its location along boundaries with neighboring states like Niger State, and appealed for stronger security strategies from the military to keep the university safe from hoodlums.
Responding, the Commander of 12 Brigade, Brig. Gen. K.U. Sidi, commended the Vice Chancellor and his team for the visit and pledged the Brigade’s support for the university’s mission. He emphasized that civil-military cooperation is vital for national security and sustainable development, and assured the university of the Brigade’s readiness to collaborate within its constitutional mandate.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to supporting educational institutions and ensuring a peaceful environment for learning. We welcome this partnership and will continue to work with the Federal University Lokoja to promote peace and security in Kogi State,” the Commander said.
Prof. Ibileye was accompanied by principal officers of the university, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof. S.D. Musa; the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Jacqueline Badaki; Bursar, Mr John Sule Shilo, the Chief Security Officer, Rtd. Lt. Col. Babafemi Sunday Mepaiyeda; and staff of the Directorate of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation.
The visit forms part of the Vice Chancellor’s ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at positioning FUL as a centre of excellence in teaching, research, and service, while building stronger ties with key institutions in Kogi State. See more pictures here
