Federal University Lokoja is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the prestigious LaSoMa (Laser and Solar Manufacturing for Africa) Scholarship Programme 2026, a major Pan-African research and academic mobility initiative co-funded by the European Union under the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme and supported by the African Union.

The LaSoMa programme is designed to build the next generation of African researchers and engineers in advanced laser manufacturing technologies for solar systems, with emphasis on zero-defect and zero-waste manufacturing processes, artificial intelligence integration, sustainability modelling, renewable energy systems, and climate change mitigation.

As part of this international consortium involving institutions in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Spain, Federal University Lokoja invites suitably qualified candidates from across Africa to apply for fully funded postgraduate opportunities in Engineering Physics and related fields.

Master’s Degree Programmes

Doctoral Programme

  • PhD Engineering Physics

RESEARCH AREAS

Successful candidates will engage in cutting-edge research in areas including:

  • Laser manufacturing technologies for solar systems
  • Photovoltaic materials and solar energy systems
  • Renewable energy storage technologies
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for manufacturing optimisation
  • Digital twin and sustainability modelling
  • Advanced materials engineering and climate mitigation technologies

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

The LaSoMa Scholarship is fully funded and provides:

  • Full tuition fee coverage
  • Monthly stipend:
  • MSc: €890 per month
  • PhD: €1230 per month
    • Comprehensive medical insurance
    • Research consumables and laboratory access
    • Conference participation and international research mobility support
    • Access to industrial and international research collaborations
    • Participation in the LaSoMa Preparatory Graduate School for technical and soft-skills development

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

  • Be nationals and residents of an African country
  • Possess relevant Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree qualifications
  • Demonstrate strong academic excellence and research potential
  • Have research interests aligned with LaSoMa focus areas
  • Possess proficiency in English language communication
