The Management of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has suspended a lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies over alleged sexual harassment of a 300L student from the same Department and has set up a committee to immediately commence investigation into the matter.

On Thursday afternoon, shortly after the Senate meeting, the University was inundated with an alleged case of sexual harassment involving the lecturer who was brought to the University premises by the parents of the student involved.

The University Management ably led by the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, recognizes the gravity of the situation and is committed to handling it in the most decisive, transparent, and timely manner. Our institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual offenses and frowns at such randy behaviour by any category of staff.

We, therefore, wish to assure members of the University Community and the general public that the Senate of the FUL is actively investigating this sensitive matter. Meanwhile, a Senate committee has been constituted to investigate and make recommendations to Management within 24 hours.

With the accused already referred to the Department of State Services (DSS) also for investigation and possible prosecution if found guilty, the position of Management is that the lecturer is relieved of all duties and positions to give room for a thorough investigation devoid of any prejudice.

We wish to reiterate that Federal University Lokoja stands firmly against any form of misconduct that tarnishes its reputation or compromises the safety and well-being of our dear students. Hence, we remain resolute in our shared commitment to uphold the utmost integrity and foster a safe learning environment for all members of our fast-growing community.

Finally, as we navigate through this challenging time, we urge everyone to allow due process to take its course and refrain from speculation or misinformation. We sincerely appreciate the support and cooperation of our students, parents, and the general public as we work diligently to ensure that justice is not only done but must also be seen to be done, as our university maintains its standards of excellence at all times.

Thank you.
