The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has honoured the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, with an Award of Appreciation for his outstanding contributions to urban and regional planning education and sustainable physical development.
Presenting the award on behalf of the National President of the Institute, Tpl Dr. Chime A. Ogbonna described Professor Akinwumi as “a true friend of the Institute,” applauding the University for being a reliable partner in advancing the ideals of urban planning and development.
The delegation, which included Tpl Dr. Senator Endurance Okosun, a committed member of the university community, commended the University’s proactive support for the Institute’s initiatives, particularly in the establishment of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the earlier appointment of a Town Planner as Director of Physical Planning, describing the moves as strategic steps that had strengthened development efforts within the fast-growing institution.
The Institute acknowledged the significant progress recorded on the University's Campus Master Plan, describing it as a testament to FUL’s clear vision for sustainable growth and infrastructural transformation. It also expressed its continued dedication to fostering professional excellence, upholding ethical standards, and advancing policies that address the evolving challenges of urbanisation across Nigeria.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chairman of the Kogi State Chapter of NITP expressed appreciation for the University’s partnership. “We are here to say thank you. The Federal University Lokoja has demonstrated exceptional commitment to our shared goals. Urban and Regional Planning will not be an orphan department here. We will continue to support and partner with the University to ensure continuous growth," he added.
In his response, Professor Akinwumi thanked the NITP for the recognition and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and sustainable development through continuous collaboration with professional bodies.
The visit and award presentation further strengthened the bond between the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and the Federal University Lokoja, reinforcing their shared vision of promoting sound physical planning and contributing meaningfully to national development. See more pictures here
