I am excited to welcome you all to this august occasion; the 14th Matriculation Ceremony of the Federal University Lokoja. On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, and students of this University, I welcome you all with open arms into the Federal University Lokoja family, where our guiding motto remains “The Sky is Our Limit.”

Matriculation is a solemn and significant academic ceremony. It marks the formal admission of candidates into the University and their recognition as bonafide students. For many of you, this is a day you have eagerly anticipated, and I congratulate you for your perseverance, determination, and success in reaching this important milestone. Your presence here today affirms your readiness to pursue academic excellence and personal growth in line with the lofty ideals of this institution.

This ceremony goes beyond symbolism; it formally and legally confers on you the status of studentship of the Federal University Lokoja. By this act, you are granted access to the rights and privileges of studentship, while also assuming its attendant responsibilities. It is for this reason that matriculation is marked by an oath-taking exercise, which binds you morally and legally to the rules, regulations, and authority of the University. Be assured that, as an institution, we will hold you accountable to the oath you are about to take.

For the 2025/2026 Academic Session, a total of 9,097 students are matriculating into the Federal University Lokoja, having successfully met the requirements of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations and the University’s screening exercise. This figure reflects not only the competitive nature of our admission process but also our steadfast commitment to merit, quality, and excellence.

This matriculation ceremony is particularly significant to me because it is the last set of students I am admitting under my administration as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of this University. I therefore receive you with a deep sense of fulfilment and pride, I am confident that you will build upon the solid foundations laid by this administration and fully embrace our philosophy that the sky is our limit.

Dear matriculants, let me clearly state that with studentship comes accuntability and discipline. You are expected to take your academic work seriously. Please note that any student with less than 75% class attendance shall not be eligible to sit for examinations at the end of each semester. Attendance is not optional; it is mandatory.

You must also avoid every form of examination misconduct and malpractice. The University has zero tolerance for such acts, and the penalties are severe. Similarly, you are advised to stay away from drug abuse and substance use, as these are corrosive habits that destroy lives and futures.

The University equally maintains strict standards on decency in appearance. You are therefore required to comply fully with the approved dress code at all times. Decency reflects discipline, and discipline is the pathway to success.

Be security conscious at all times, and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. You are also strongly advised to stay away from all forms of violent protest throughout your stay in the University. Dialogue, not violence, remains the acceptable means of engagement.

Every matriculant is expected to obtain a copy of the Students’ Handbook, study it carefully, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations enshrined therein. Let me emphasize that ignorance of the rules is not an excuse.

Beyond academics, I encourage you to participate actively in sporting and recreational activities, as these contribute to your physical well-being and holistic development. Respect your colleagues and all members of staff of the University, as mutual respect will make your stay here peaceful, productive, and fulfilling.

You must also make the most of the opportunity afforded you by your parents and guardians, many of whom have made great sacrifices to see you seated here today. Shun all forms of deviant behaviour and social vices. Remain focused on why you are here; to learn, to grow, and to prepare for the future. Do not be an NFA—No Future Ambition student. Have a vision, set goals, and pursue them with diligence.

As the great philosopher Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Another wise saying reminds us that “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Your future begins here and now.

Once again, I congratulate our matriculants, and I extend my congratulations to their parents and guardians for this proud moment. I wish you all a rewarding, disciplined, and successful academic journey at the Federal University Lokoja.

Thank you, and God bless.

Professor Olayemi Akinwumi
Vice-Chancellor

Endnote: Remarkably, the 2025/2026 admission exercise recorded the highest number of admitted students in the history of Federal University Lokoja since its establishment in 2011. The 14th Matriculation Ceremony was the first matriculation to be held at the main campus of the University (Felele), and the last to be conducted under Professor Olayemi Akinwumi's administration as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor.
