Members of the
Congregation, Federal University Lokoja (FUL) have elected their Representatives
to the 3rd Governing Council of the University at the 4th
Congregation Meeting which took place on Wednesday, 9th September,
2020 at the University Auditorium, Adankolo Campus.
The two (2) Members
of Staff (one each from the Academic and Non-Academic) who emerged at the election
that was keenly contested were Dr.
Tajudeen Oladele Ahmed, Department of Physics and Mr. Atabo Benjamin Ocholi, Bursary Department. While Dr. Tajudeen
Oladele Ahmed was re-elected for the second time having completed his first
tenure with the 2nd Governing Council, Mr. Atabo Benjamin Ocholi, on
the other hand, was elected for the first time. Both of them will represent the
Congregation as Internal Members of the 3rd Governing Council of Federal University Lokoja.
In
her opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Angela Freeman Miri who presided
over the meeting as the Chairperson of Congregation, reiterated the composition
of the Congregation as stipulated in the University Establishment Act 2015, which
consists of all the Principal Officers, full time Members of the Academic Staff
and every Member of the Administrative and Technical Staff who holds a Degree of
any University recognized by the Vice-Chancellor, not being an Honorary Degree.
The Meeting began
with the Registrar and Secretary of the Congregation, Mr. Suleman Usman Obansa
calling for the selection of Members of the Communique Drafting Committee. Also,
Members of the Electoral College were unanimously selected, headed by Mr. Shamaki
Nuhu, a Deputy Registrar and Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies of the
University.
Similarly, two (2)
Members of the Congregation were elected into the Council’s Search Team for the
appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for the University according to the
Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993 as Amended. They are
Professor Abdullahi Emmanuel Bala, Dean,
Faculty of Science and Mrs Omoayena Duro-Bello,
Deputy Registrar and Academic Secretary respectively.
The election of
the two Members of Congregation into the Search Team became necessary following
Council’s approval of the commencement of the Selection Process for a new
Vice-Chancellor which has commenced with the advertisement placed in two (2) National
Dailies (Daily Trust of Friday, 4th September, 2020 and Daily Sun of
Thursday, 3rd and Friday 4th September, 2020), as the Five-Year
Tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor will end in February, 2021.
The
Vice-Chancellor congratulated those elected and wished them success in their
new assignments. She equally charged them to work for the progress of the
University, stressing that the tasks before them were very critical to the
development of the University. Professor Miri thanked Members and everyone that
worked for the peaceful conduct of the elections.
