A 100-level student of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) from the Department of Mathematics, Victor Ikechukwu Orakpo, has won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in the Bayern Munich Football Trial which took place in Germany.
The cheering news was disclosed to the University Community by the Sports Coordinator, Mr. Sirajo Yusuf who was delighted to announce that one of FUL contingents at the just concluded 2022 Higher Institutions Football League (HIFL) has emerged as the MVP at Munich in Germany, adding that the current FUL football team is replete with a lot of talented players.
Furthermore, the Sports Coordinator, who described the outing in Munich by the Nigerian team as exceptional, stated that in addition to winning the tournament, members of the team also won other awards including the Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) which was won by Victor.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi has maintained that his Administration was determined to project FUL to the world through sports by giving it the needed support and creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive through which the University can discover young players with great potentials and train them to represent her at both national and international competitions.
Professor Akinwumi made the commitment recently during a meeting he held with a group of sports professionals known as Volunteer Coaches of Confluence City Basketball Academy.
While addressing the coaches in his office, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that sports in FUL would be given adequate attention. He stressed that sports have the capacity of boosting the image and reputation of the University even at the global level, citing the recent 2022 Olympic Games where the students and alumni of Stanford University won most of the medals.
The erudite scholar and avid sport-lover noted that his Administration was working assiduously to achieve the set objective as evidently seen in the ongoing construction of an ultra-modern sports complex/recreational center at the Permanent Site, the constitution of a high-powered committee chaired by Mr. E.D. Obafemi, a globally recognized FIFA-rated football coach and referee, with other notable and accomplished sports professionals from within and outside the University as members, to develop blueprints for sustainable sports development in the University, as well as the ongoing efforts to construct a standard gym for indoor games, among others.
